I was diagnosed as coeliac at 17 just over 10 years ago. Having not grown up coeliac nor having heard of it before, let alone knowing anyone else that had it, I found it really difficult to adapt. It made becoming more independent and then heading off to uni shortly after diagnosis even more daunting than it already was. But over time I have learned to deal with it, and I have tried to make sure I haven’t missed out on anything in life as a result of not eating (or drinking) gluten, be it dinners, days out or holidays. I am really passionate about the fact that being coeliac shouldn’t stop you from going out and having fun, and showing people there are lots of great places you can still go – albeit you might have to be less spontaneous and do more research than ‘normal’ people. That’s why I started an Instagram account to give recommendations to other coeliacs that may be less willing to risk trying new places. Even if it only helps a couple of people it’s more than worth it.
